The Planetarium and Maritime Museum in the Portuguese capital will host the first edition of the Ocean Summit 2024 for two days, an international event that will bring together renowned experts from four continents, including Cape Verde, and is organized by the Carlos Albertino Veiga Foundation.

Paulo Veiga, President of the Foundation and also one of the participants in the Ocean Summit, adds that the initiative promises to drive new discoveries about the oceans and create unprecedented opportunities for knowledge sharing and innovation.

Aquanaut Fabien Cousteau, grandson of the legendary oceanographer Jacques Cousteau and founder of the Proteus Ocean Group, is one of the featured guests at this inaugural edition, and will share his vision on the crucial role of the oceans for planetary sustainability.

Quoted in an official statement sent to OPAÍS.cv , Paulo Veiga points out that the Ocean Summit “is a unique opportunity to bring together brilliant minds and discuss concrete solutions to protect our oceans, which are the heart of our planet”.

“It is through collaboration and innovation that we will be able to face the global challenges facing our seas, ensuring that future generations can benefit from a healthy and sustainable ocean,” emphasized the Cape Verdean representative, who also highlighted the importance of this event taking place in Lisbon. “Portugal has a centuries-old connection to the sea; with the ocean being one of the great national assets, Lisbon is the ideal stage to host this Summit,” he testified.

With free admission, the Ocean Summit 2024 will provide an "unmissable opportunity" for all those interested to participate directly in discussions about the future of the oceans. "With no prior registration required, the event welcomes all those who wish to engage in the debate on innovative solutions and marine sustainability, in a space of international collaboration," says the organization.

The Carlos Albertino Veiga Foundation, established in 2000 in Cape Verde, is organizing this edition, in partnership with Proteus Ocean Group, a private sector social enterprise that is developing PROTEUS, a state-of-the-art modular and sustainable underwater habitat.

The Ocean Summit proceedings begin at 10:00 AM on the 29th, with speeches from prominent figures in the field of ocean preservation, followed by panels dedicated to the impact of climate change on biodiversity and the law of the sea.

On the final day, the focus will be on the blue economy and sustainable tourism, with presentations from business leaders and experts exploring how investment can drive innovation and sustainability in the oceans, concluding the day with a discussion on the strategic relationship between Cape Verde and Portugal in the development of Atlantic platforms.
