This month, as we celebrate Cape Verde's independence, we honor a man who dedicated his life to the cause of freedom, justice, and democracy: Carlos Alberto Wahnon de Carvalho Veiga. A jurist, diplomat, politician, and patriot, Carlos Veiga was the first democratically elected head of government in Cape Verde, symbolizing a generation of leaders who knew how to transform hope into a national project.
More than the positions he held, Carlos Veiga distinguished himself by his integrity of character, his vision for a modern Cape Verde, and the firmness with which he always defended dialogue, inclusion, and the rule of law. He never confused adversaries with enemies, nor power with privilege. His legacy is inscribed not only in the institutions he helped build, but above all in the democratic consciousness of Cape Verdeans.
The Foundation that proudly honors him today has the mission of continuing this work, making civic culture, education, knowledge, and maritime diplomacy the pillars of a more sustainable and freer future.
Carlos Veiga is, and always will be, a source of national pride, because he taught us that serving Cape Verde is the noblest way to love freedom.
