On November 7, 2025, the city of Mindelo hosted the Ocean Summit 2025, an event that will be remembered as one of the most important steps in establishing Cape Verde as an oceanic nation. Under the motto "The Ocean We Know, The Future We Build," we brought together experts, policymakers, partner institutions, and representatives from the private sector for a day of work, reflection, and collective commitment around the sea, ocean literacy, and the opportunities of the blue economy. The opening included the participation of Lili Caneças, Ambassador of the Carlos Albertino Veiga Foundation, and the Minister of the Sea of Cape Verde, Jorge Santos, who emphasized the importance of this meeting for the country and for the African Atlantic. The presentation of four structuring projects followed, among them the Carlos Albertino Veiga Foundation Hub for the Ocean, an initiative that mobilizes science, innovation, marine education and community development and which will be one of the transformative pillars of our action in 2026. Throughout the day, we had the presence of reference institutions, including the Vasco da Gama Aquarium, the Lisbon Oceanarium, the Directorate-General for Maritime Policies of Portugal, the Technical University of the Atlantic and the Escola Azul – Portuguese School of São Vicente. The sharing of knowledge, experiences and visions was profound and inspiring, reinforcing the centrality of the ocean in the contemporary economy, education and diplomacy. One of the most symbolic moments of the Summit was precisely the official visit to the Escola Azul, which welcomed us with open arms to present its exemplary work in ocean education. This visit reinforced existing partnerships and opened new possibilities for collaboration in the training of future generations. The week was also marked by the Official Ocean Summit Dinner, held in partnership with Nortuna, which was attended at the head table by the Minister of the Sea of Cape Verde and the Secretary of State for the Sea of Portugal. It was a moment of active diplomacy, strategic dialogue and strengthening of bridges between the two countries, essential for the path ahead. The highlight of the event was the signing of the Mindelo Commitment, formalized by the President of the Foundation, Paulo Veiga, in which we reaffirmed our determination to implement, throughout 2026, the projects presented at the Summit, including the Ocean Hub, the Diving Bell, the Ocean Observatory and Drones for the Ocean. This commitment reflects the Foundation's vision: to transform the sea into an axis of sustainable development, a space of knowledge, and a horizon of the future for Cape Verde. The Carlos Albertino Veiga Foundation deeply thanks all the partners involved, from the Government of Cape Verde to the Government of Portugal, including the scientific, academic, and business institutions that agreed to walk with us. Every contribution was essential. What we built in Mindelo was not just an event, but a turning point. The Ocean Summit 2025 was the beginning of a new cycle. In 2026, we will continue to transform commitment into action and we will meet again at the Ocean Summit 2026.
